Overview
Welcome to the Tampa Bay Lightning Adaptive Learn to Play Hockey program! This inclusive initiative is designed to introduce children, between the ages of 4 and 16, with physical and neuro-developmental differences to the exciting sport of hockey in a fun, supportive, and safe environment. Hosted at Clearwater Ice Arena, our program offers two specialized tracks to ensure every child has the chance to experience the joy of hockey in a way that suits their needs and abilities.
The program will consist of eight (8) hour long on-ice training sessions over the course of eight (8) weeks. Participants will receive their own complete set of hockey equipment to keep as they progress into a next-step adaptive hockey program.
Program Details & Registration
- To be eligible for the Lightning Learn to Play Program, children registering must be between the ages of 4-16 for Learn to Play Sled Hockey and the ages of 5-10 for the Neurodiverse Learn to Play program.
- This inclusive initiative is designed to introduce children with physical and neuro-developmental differences to the exciting sport of hockey in a fun, supportive, and safe environment.
Program Information
- The Lightning Learn to Play Program registration fee is $150 per child. This covers the cost of the eight instructor sessions, full set of equipment (including skates/Sled) and a USA Hockey Membership for 1 year.
Program Options
- Learn to Play Sled Hockey - For children with physical disabilities - This program is tailored for participants who require mobility support and would benefit from using a sled and adaptive gear. No skating or prior experience is necessary—just a love for the game and a willingness to try something new!
- Neurodiverse Learn to Play - For children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and other cognitive or learning differences) - This sensory-friendly version of Learn to Play is structured to support children with neurodiverse needs through predictable routines, experienced coaches, and a welcoming environment. Activities will focus on building confidence, social skills, and motor coordination—while having fun on the ice!
What's Included
- Head-to-toe equipment for registered participants. Each participant will receive the following new Lightning customized equipment to call their own:
- Ice Hockey Helmet
- Neck Guard
- Shoulder Pads
- Elbow Pads
- Ice Hockey Skates or Sled
- Hockey Gloves
- Hockey Pants (For Neurodiverse LTP)
- Shin Guards
- Customized Lightning Jersey
- Hockey Socks
- Hockey Stick or Sticks
- Equipment Carrying Bag
- Upon completion of the Learn to Play program, participants will be able to keep the equipment to continue their hockey journey with the exception of the Sled which will be a temporary loan.
- Also included is a FREE USA Hockey Membership for a year.
